Project Overview
Working with a state transportation authority, Total Stormwater Solutions designed and installed a linear green infrastructure system along a 6-mile highway corridor. The project replaced failing roadside ditches with a continuous bioswale system integrated with sediment forebays at major inlets, significantly reducing pollutant loads to adjacent waterways.
Scope of Work
- Assessment of existing drainage conditions along 6-mile corridor
- Bioswale design for 3.2 miles of roadside application
- Sediment forebay design at 12 major drainage inlets
- VDOT permit coordination and plan approval
- Native grass and wildflower seeding specification
- Construction phasing plan to minimize traffic impacts
- Establishment monitoring and corrective seeding program
Results
- 95% TSS removal efficiency in post-construction monitoring
- Eliminated chronic erosion at 8 problem locations
- Native plant establishment reduced maintenance frequency
- Template adopted by VDOT for similar corridor projects
